鍋焼きうどん (Nabeyaki Udon) from Maguroya!

鍋焼きうどん (Nabeyaki Udon) from Maguroya!

鍋焼きうどん (nabeyaki udon) is one of my favorite foods because you get all the good stuff in one bowl. It’s wheat-flour noodles with seafood and vegetables cooked in a metal pot. It is common to see shrimp tempura, mushrooms, and a cracked egg on the top. Find it and order it at your nearest local Japanese restaurant!

Closing the Generation Gap with the Gift of Language

Due to the unique mixed upbringing of Hawaii’s children, many have lost the ability to speak their own culture’s language. A group of four friends decided they wanted to change this situation by opening up a language school to restore the cultural gap between generations.

Honolulu, Hawaii December 27, 2009 – Sharon Fukayama, a current PhD student at University of Hawaii at Manoa’s College of Education, has always dreamed of opening a language school. “It is important that children and adults are able to speak their native language. Not only will it bring them closer to their relatives, it will also give them a better understanding of their culture and a competitive advantage in the world. Many people in Hawaii are now 4th, 5th or 6th generations down the line so a lot of their culture and language have been lost,” explained Sharon. “Grandparents and grandchildren aren’t able to communicate with one another without the help of a translator and it is heartbreaking.”

That is why Sharon and three friends came together to create a language school called Meeto World. Students learn through the use of creating their own story with video and technology. This makes language learning not only informative but also fun and relatable to their lives. Currently, Meeto World teaches Japanese and English language classes to children and adults.

Sharon hopes that by giving the gift of language to her students she can help bring families and generations closer together.

Meeto World is a language proficiency school that currently specializes in Japanese and English. Classes are held at Kahala Elementary. Children’s classes (ages 6-12) are from Monday’s through Friday’s from 2:30-3:15; or on Saturday’s from 8 am to 8:45 am. Adult classes (ages 13+) are held on Saturdays from 9 am – 11 am.
